2018 TASH Conference has ended
Each year, the TASH Conference brings together a diverse community of stakeholders who gain information, learn about resources, and connect with others across the country to strengthen the disability field. This year’s conference theme, “Be Creative - Innovative Solutions for an Inclusive Life,” reminds us to think outside the box during times of uncertainty. Creativity, innovation, and determination can pave the way for meaningful and inclusive lives for people with disabilities.

Even after being diagnosed with depression, I still hid it from most people. But why? Millions of Americans live with depression. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), one in 10 adults (defined as 18 and over) are depressed at any given time, and women, minorities, and those unemployed are most likely to meet the criteria of major depression. The World Health Organization calls it a leading cause of ill health and disability worldwide. So why is it that people are still afraid to talk about it? When we hear about horrible things on the news, why does the topic of mental health immediately arise? Why is it only in times of crisis that we hear about the lack of funding for mental health? Let's clear the air about what depression is, and, what it isn't. Let's TALK about it! The stigma of living with a mental illness can be overwhelming and it takes honesty, strength and resiliency to live a journey of recovery. It also takes acceptance. Acceptance from society, acceptance by those living with a mental illness, and acceptance from loved ones. I will be in recovery for the rest of my life, and part of my recovery is to stop being embarrassed, address the stigma, practice self-care, and TALK about it.
